DevOps and Site Reliability Engineer
Paulo Jerônimo is a DevOps Engineer with experience in SRE. His first contact with CI/CD was in 2011, with Hudson (which was renamed Jenkins). Today, he also sets pipelines using GitHub Actions or AWS CodePipeline (for example). This contact is much more recent than your experience with Linux (since 1993) or as a Java dev (since 1998). In 2002, he started using Shell Script to automate Java middleware installation/ configuration and implementation of components on servers when working at Brasil Telecom. In 2008 he started to learn Python when he worked at the Central Bank of Brazil (through Ambima) and integrated teams responsible for installing servers, deploying components, monitoring and analyzing logs and problems, in the production, of executable applications in middleware (Tomcat, JBoss, Apache, Ngnix, etc.). He acted preemptively by using monitoring tools (JON, Nagios, and Zabbix) and reviewing logs. Today, he meets Prometheus and Grafana. When failures occurred, he was responsible for using tools to identify memory leaks and performance bottlenecks. He proactively interacts with development, infrastructure, and operations teams. From that year onwards, he works in DevOps or SRE tasks on servers of private companies or the government (CNPq, TRF-1, Caixa, STN, and others). He had used and developed Docker containers since 2014, when he spoke about it at JUDCon (a Red Hat event). In 2015, with more luggage in Java EE, infrastructure, DevOps, and SRE, he returned to work as Software Architect. He used Vagrant in the automation of SISLEGIS environments and also to set up clusters and test labs of performance. Today, he prefers Docker or Linux Containers for this. With Vagrant, in addition to making advanced use of Bash for provisioning, he learned to program in Ruby and to use Puppet and Ansible. Today, to assemble an entire infrastructure in a cloud, he uses his CLI tool or Terraform (which is similar to Vagrant but different in purposes). In 2016, at Red Hat, he was responsible for upgrading dozens of JBoss servers on B3 and Previ. This involved updating the Java code of several applications. He improved his skills in computer security issues such as OpenSSL, JWT, OAuth, and Keycloak (RH-SSO). He learned Kubernetes using OpenShift. In 2017, he published videos about it and worked with his installation, configuration, and deployment of microservices. Today, he quickly installs Kubernetes in a cloud (via EKS or AKS) or even in Linux Containers. He learned Amazon Web Services (AWS) (IAM, EC2, and S3, via CLI) and Microsoft Azure. In the latter, he created validator nodes for Bitcoin and Ethereum to study them. In 2018, he gained more experience in security and microservices with Spring Boot running on CloudFoundry, working for Thales in Lisbon. In 2019, he returned to Brazil and started a career more focused on Web3 as a Full Stack Developer in his own business. In 2020, he improved on OpenStack and recorded videos about it. He worked at Caixa Seguradora using OpenShift and Keycloak in an even more specialized way. He used Google Cloud Platform (GCP) to solve a severe problem for a company that has Passbolt installed on it. Today, about GCP, he uses Firebase. In 2021, he specialized more in AWS services. He developed an event-driven project for OSO DevOps involving, in addition to standard services, Chalice, Lambda, Kinesis, and EKS. Today, he uses TypeScript and CDK for IaC.
